JWA Women with Vision Scholarship Award Announced
January 17, 2021

JWA offers two annual scholarships to students interested in careers in design, planning and sustainability through Bard Microcollege Holyoke and Greenfield Community College. Says JWA Principal Dorrie Brooks of the reason for the scholarships, “For too long the cost of college and advanced degrees has discouraged talented people of color from entering our profession.  But this is also about enriching our professional culture.   We believe that design, planning and policy decisions are more effective when they are shaped by the valuable variety of perspectives and backgrounds within our communities."

Garfield Ave - Habitat for Humanity International Award Winner
January 7, 2021

Well-insulated and powered by the sun, the home is designed for a single adult or couple with potential for the addition of a second bedroom. With a HERS index rating of 8 the home is anticipated to cost only $238 a year in utilities making it affordable to build and to live in. JWA worked with PVHH on a pro-bono basis as a part of our firm’s commitment to dedicate 1% of our professional hours to pro-bono work in our local community.

Designer Molly Clark and Principal Dorrie Brooks led the project, creating a set of documents expressly designed for non-professional builders and volunteers; documents which are now available to other chapters of Habitat for Humanity International.

DIAL/SELF WMAIA 2020 MERIT AWARD WINNER
December 9, 2020

WMAIA Design awards were based on a new set of AIA frameworks this year which centered on sustainable, resilient and equitable designs. The new criteria were intended to be “accessible and relevant for every architect, every client, and every project, regardless of size, typology, or aspiration.” Completed in 2019 DIAL/SELF Northampton is certainly a community centered and environmentally conscious design.

The design presents a modern take on vernacular, farmhouse architecture fitting into a  single family neighborhood. The micro units are 300 sf apartments with built-in furnishings and shared amenities.  The facility also includes a drop-in center and staff offices to support social work outreach in the Northampton area. A grant received through Northeast Solar provides photovoltaic panels that meet the building’s energy needs.

This project involved collaboration between JWA and Keiter Builders. A special thanks to JWA’s Henry Albin for his hard work and dedication.

Confronting the Region’s Veterans’ Housing Needs
February 13, 2020

In response to the growing affordable housing crisis here in Massachusetts, JWA has slowly built up its housing chops by working on innovative projects with progressive non-profits and developers, including SHOP Development, LLC; Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity and DIAL/SELF.  This year we are pleased to continue this trend to the next level.  JWA has been awarded the role of lead designer on the proposed Winchendon Veterans Housing Project for the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center.  In collaboration with Elton Hampton Architects, JWA is designing 35-45 single apartment units for the veterans of northern Worcester County.
