When East Longmeadow was accepted into the MSBA core project pipeline for a new high school, they were careful to not miss out on the generational opportunity. Through a year of extensive public meetings and design events, the community established a vision of a more welcoming, community-oriented high school that would encourage the development of the whole student and support the District’s commitment to Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

The new school exceeds community expectations, with a two story central corridor that carries students to a new south-facing cafeteria that opens to a terrace and binds together two academic wings, each anchored by a daylit stairwell and generous common area. Each academic wing contains modern science labs, classrooms, resource rooms and planning rooms,

In addition to strengthening core academic spaces the new school celebrates hands-on and creative learning opportunities by bringing larger elective studio spaces, like engineering, cooking and graphic design, near to the core of the school. The design wraps the new auditorium in art, band, chorus and digital video classrooms to create a vibrant arts wing. While the 6500 sf gymnasium remains accessible to the community near the front of the school and will continue to support ELHS’s highly regarded athletics programs, the new school is also likely to become well-known for its dynamic art, performing art, digital arts and music programs thanks to the much improved facilities.

The all-electric building includes a 450kW rooftop photovoltaic array, low maintenance plantings, natural storm water management systems, outdoor teaching spaces, new athletic fields and on-site electric vehicle charging stations.
