Longmeadow Middle School

Longmeadow, MA | 2028

The Town of Longmeadow is known for its deep commitment to K12 education and community involvement in its schools.  At the middle school level, there have always been two schools and two communities.  With both buildings aging and desperately needing to be upgraded, the Town hired JWA to conduct a feasibility study to meet the needs of 625 students in grades 6-8. Various sites were explored before the current Williams School location was selected for a consolidated middle school. This 11 acre site is only blocks from the center of town and Longmeadow High School, making it central for families from all parts of the community.

Residents rallied in support of the project, passing a debt exclusion by both ballot and town meeting vote. The District has embraced the consolidation as an opportunity to revamp the middle school curriculum and schedule.  The three grade levels are to be divided into two 105 student teams with each team clustered around a shared common area.  Grade level planning rooms will support teaching teams.

The proposed building consists of three masses or “houses” linked together along a central circulation spine that runs from Williams Street on the south to a community entrance at the north. Two central stairs bring light into the circulation spine and provide views into courtyards between the academic houses. A light masonry exterior wraps the main houses while a colorful rainscreen marks the connections to the main circulation spine.

The all-electric school will be heated and cooled via a geothermal heat exchange system with photovoltaic panels meeting its electrical requirements in alignment with Massachusetts Net-Zero Ready energy code standards.

The project is in construction and due to be completed by September, 2028
